Thematic studies 20 ECTS

Our thematic doctoral programme 'The Arctic in a Changing World' includes a set of thematic studies (20 study credits). Thematic studies will offer to you a multidisciplinary knowledge base for inspiring your learning and also career planning. Thematic studies in your doctoral degree are demonstrable, as you will receive a certificate with your PhD diploma about the content of the thematic studies and their relevance to employers interested in highly skilled employees.

What to choose

The thematic studies (20 study credits) are divided into four modules: Introduction to Arctic Research, Research Seminar, Research Training and Career, and Current Issues in Arctic Research. The syllabus for each academic year includes courses to choose from in each module.

Kindly note that you should take courses from each module, and the required number of study credits for each module is flexible. In other words, we do not require you to take a particular number of credits in each module but require that you take and complete something from each module, thus building your expertise further into a suitable direction in your situation.

 

Core courses: Introduction to Arctic Research, Research Seminar

The first two modules – Introduction to Arctic Research, and Research Seminar – include only one course each, making them the core courses of the programme. Core courses are taken by all doctoral researchers of the programme. The third and fourth modules – i.e. Research Training and Career, and Current Issues in Arctic Research – have a wider selection for you to choose from based on your particular needs for building your expertise.
