Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland is seeking candidates for

Two post-doctoral positions (ca. 45 months) starting in the fall 2020, by 1 October 2020 at the latest.

The fields of research are:
1) geography/ecology/earth system science; and
2) social anthropology/human geography

The Arctic Centre, University of Lapland is seeking to fill two post-doctoral research positions that will address decadal to centennial changes in Arctic climate and biodiversity, including social-ecological feedbacks and drivers. The applicant should be prepared to begin at least part-time virtual participation by 1 October 2020.
Both positions are to be based in Rovaniemi, Finland and require full-time residence at Arctic Centre during the respective periods of employment.

The positions are key personnel appointments for scientific management of the project “Feedbacks and Drivers of Changes in Arctic Terrestrial Biodiversity (CHARTER)”, which is funded by the EU’s Horizon2020 “Changing Cryosphere” programme. The specific requirements and terms of reference appear in the individual advertisement texts below.

Project description and working tasks
CHARTER is a 21-member consortium spread across 9 countries, coordinated by Arctic Centre. It represents a circumpolar effort to tackle central themes of the H2020’s “Changing Cryosphere” programme. As such, the positions will encompass diverse tasks including: co-development of knowledge in direct partnerships with indigenous and other local stakeholders (e.g. Arctic residents, administrators and decision-makers); analysis and interpretation of complex datasets encompassing the life, physical and social sciences; strong transdisciplinary and international collaboration; intensive scientific and administrative management; and ongoing outreach and dissemination.

Qualifications for position 1
Successful candidates should have a PhD in bio- or physical geography, ecology, earth system science or a related field. To be eligible for this position, the applicant should have completed her/his doctoral degree a maximum of five (5) years before the end of the application period, unless special circumstances exist. We seek a creative and highly motivated person with a strong publication record, strong statistical modelling skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Prior experience of working with Arctic remote sensing, terrestrial snow/ice dynamics, effects of herbivores on tundra vegetation/biodiversity, Arctic ecosystems or climate modelling are all regarded as merits. Finnish and/or Russian language skills will be considered as a highly complementary merit. The applicant should be able to work both independently and in close collaboration with others.
The position will consist of approximately 80% research and 20% administrative work with assisting the coordinator in running the project and communication/data sharing with the 21 CHARTER consortium partners. About 1% will be devoted to teaching in the university’s Arctic Studies Program.

Qualifications for position 2
Successful candidates should have a PhD in social anthropology, human geography, or a related field. To be eligible for this position, the applicant should have completed her/his doctoral degree a maximum of five (5) years before the end of the application period, unless special circumstances exist. We seek a creative and highly motivated person with a strong publication record, strong participant observation experience, related fieldwork/ participatory workshop experience, and excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Prior experience of working with Arctic (or other) nomadic pastoralist cultures, Arctic rangeland management/biodiversity, extreme weather/climate change modelling or social-ecological/resilience theory, are all regarded as merits. Russian (especially) and Finnish language skills will be considered as a highly complementary merit. The applicant should be able to work both independently and in collaboration with others.

The Postdoctoral Researcher’s salary is based on the university’s salary system and is fixed at teaching and research personnel’s competence level 5, according to which the monthly task-specific salary component amounts to €2,935.55. In addition, the total salary includes a personal salary component amounting up to 50 % of the task-specific salary component.
