Nordic Gender Equality Fund (NIKK)-Nordic Funding Scheme has awarded DKK 342 950 (45 941€) for network development and small studies to the Unit of Gender Studies of the Faculty of Education, University of Lapland for a two year project from September 2019 to September 2021.

Nicholas Rowe’s doctoral thesis points out that although posters are by far the most prevalent form of conference presentation, they don’t actually work in a reliable way. The academic and scientific communities continue to present their conference posters, despite them attracting very little interest, being seen as ‘second-rate’, and having little tangible worth as an academic currency. His thesis lifts the lid on this under-researched phenomenon, and asks whether our conference activities really merit their multi-billion annual price tag, and whether we can (or should) take steps to gain a better return on our investments of time, effort and money?

Doctoral defence: Digital Open Badge-Driven Learning – Competence-based Professional Development for Vocational Teachers

Digital open badges are gaining popularity as a means of identification and recognition of competences acquired differently. At the same time, new ways to motivate, scaffold and assess competence-based learning processes in professional development are emerging. In her doctoral dissertation, M.Sci. Sanna Brauer examines vocational pre- and in-service teachers different ideas, views and experiences of digital open badge-driven learning in professional development of digital pedagogical competences. The study is the first European doctoral dissertation to address digital open badges and digital open badge-driven learning.

New project to support the integration of children with immigrant background in school education

Lars Levi Laestadius (1800–1861) is known as one of the most influential Swedish pietistic Lutheran revivalists, a multidisciplinary scientist, and founder of Laestadian movements in northern Scandinavia. His religious and scientific work has had a significant impact on the spiritual and cultural life of northern Scandinavia, but up to this date his thinking, adhering to anthropology and the philosophy of religion, has not been studied at the doctoral level in the field of philosophy. M.Soc.Sc. Kosti Joensuu’s dissertation reveals new information about Laestadius, as a philosophical thinker.

Associate professor Satu Uusiautti and Professor Kaarina Määttä have edited a book that describes the foundations and idea of caring research. The book is titled The Basics of Caring Research. The book is published by a respected international publisher Sense Publishers in the publisher's special series Bold Visions in Educational Research.
