Salaried doctoral education at the University of Lapland: successful candidates appointed

At the turn of the year, the University of Lapland announced four paid doctoral education vacancies. The positions relate to the new, multidisciplinary doctoral education alternative ”The Arctic in a Changing World”. The successful candidates appointed to the positions are Auni Haapala, Krittika Singh, Heidi Konttinen and Salla Kalliojärvi.

Suomen Ulkomaankaupan Edistämisrahasto (SUE): Grant application period 1–31 May 2021 for Master’s theses

In spring 2020 Suomen Ulkomaankaupan Edistämisrahasto (SUE) [the Finnish foreign trade promotion fund], the University of Lapland, and the University of Eastern Finland signed a collaboration agreement with an aim to support Master’s theses that address the internationalisation or export of companies in Lapland and eastern Finland. This spring’s grant application period starts on 1 May 2021.

The new international Master’s degree in service design

The new international Master’s degree in service design, "the Service Design Strategies and Innovation" (SDSI) envisages to kick off in the Fall 2021. The new programme focuses on interdisciplinary studies and cross-specialisation in design, business, technologies and social sciences. Graduates will be awarded with a Master’s double degree, one from the University of Lapland and one from the Art Academy of Latvia.

Universities organise entrance examinations with strict safety arrangements

The majority of entrance examinations will be held in May–June. Changes to the manner of administering the examinations are made only if required by regulations issued by the authorities.

In spring 2020 Suomen Ulkomaankaupan Edistämisrahasto (SUE, the Finnish foreign trade promotion fund), the University of Lapland, and the University of Eastern Finland signed a collaboration agreement with an aim to support master’s theses that address the internationalisation or export of companies in Lapland and eastern Finland. In the second cooperation application period, Joonas Ervasti from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Lapland was rewarded for his thesis in management that explores the utilisation of design thinking in supporting the international growth of Finnish companies.

More applicants to international degree programmes at the universities of Lapland

The period to apply for foreign-language education at the University of Lapland and Lapland University of Applied Sciences ended on Wednesday 20 January. The number of applicants to both universities increased from the previous time.

The Finnish universities have concluded that, due to the coronavirus situation, organising traditional entrance examinations is not possible without compromising the safety of those involved. What makes guaranteeing safety impossible is the severity of the pandemic, the difficulty of identifying those at a higher risk for serious illness, as well as the risks associated with the examination situation itself.
