New International MA degree in Arctic World Politics is launched with five online lectures in November – December 2024

University of Lapland to provide 25 000 euros of additional annual support for students' Wellness pass

The Wellness pass, organised by the Student Union of the University of Lapland (LYY), provides university and UAS students with a wide range of sport and cultural benefits in Rovaniemi. The University of Lapland granted the Wellness pass an additional annual support of €25 000 for the period 2024–2028.

University entrance exams to be reformed in 2025 – application to several fields of study made easier

From 2025, universities will have nine national entrance exams, which will allow applicants to apply for a wide range of different subjects and universities. At the same time, the timetable for the entrance exams will be relaxed so that those selected by certificate-based admissions will no longer have to prepare for and take the entrance exams.

Entrance exams for universities will be renewed in 2025 – universities are currently reviewing a draft of the new entrance exam model

Students will soon be able to take one entrance exam and use it to apply to several universities and fields of study. The reform will significantly reduce the number of entrance exams. This will make it possible to adjust the schedule of admissions so that those selected through certificate-based admission do not need to prepare for the entrance exams.

Electronic diploma as an official certificate for those graduating from November onwards

The University of Lapland will starts using electronic degree certificates during November. The authenticity of electronic diploma can be verified more reliably than paper certificate. Student can save the electronic diploma in one´s own files, for example on a computer or cloud service.

Revised certificate-based admission to be introduced in 2026 – the draft scoring model now under consideration at universities

The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

The international Service Design Strategies and Innovations programme becomes an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's

The master's programme in Service Design Strategies and Innovations by the University of Lapland and the Art Academy of Latvia expands to Estonia next academic year, as the Estonian Academy of Arts will also join the collaboration. The programme has received almost 4.9 million euros in funding from the European Union for a period of six years and the status of an Erasmus Mundus joint master's degree programme. For students it means, for example, studying in three countries and a possibility for substantial grants. The application period for the Service Design Strategies and Innovations (SDSI) master's degree programme lasts until February 28, 2023.

Suomen Ulkomaankaupan Edistämisrahasto (SUE): Grant application period for Master's theses is open

In spring 2020 Suomen Ulkomaankaupan Edistämisrahasto (SUE) [the Finnish foreign trade promotion fund], the University of Lapland, and the University of Eastern Finland signed a collaboration agreement with an aim to support Master's theses that address the internationalisation or export of companies in Lapland and eastern Finland. The grant application period is open between 1 December 2022 and 8 January 2023.

New study module considers what EU climate politics means for environmental protection, security and local communities in the Arctic
