The publication "Relate North. Possible Futures" edited by Professor Glen Coutts and Professor Timo Jokela examines art and design education, research and information exchange in the Arctic and Northern regions. The publication also reflects on other themes relevant to these regions, such as the socio-cultural and geopolitical dimensions of living in Northern and remote areas.

University of Lapland receives substantial SRC funding for research on just green transition in the Arctic

The Strategic Research Council (SRC) under the Research Council of Finland granted a total of 27 million euros in funding to ten project consortia related to research on just green transition. One of the funded projects is the REBOUND project, led by Tanja Joona, University Researcher at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland.

New publication: Seabed anchored curtains to prevent the collapse of West Antarctica Ice Sheet

As the climate changes, more and more warm seawater reaches the glaciers of Antarctica and threatens them to collapse. A group of researchers explores how feasible the idea is to block channels that bring warm water to the glaciers with flexible buoyant curtains, anchored to the seabed. Their study has now been published in the open access journal PNAS Nexus.

The visit will be hosted by President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö together with his spouse, Dr. Jenni Haukio. For the nomadic Nenets people living in Yamal Peninsula, reindeer are a way of life. A recently published story by the BBC describes how climate change causes uncertainties for reindeer and the whole identity and culture of the Nenets. Research professor Florian Stammler was involved in the film project and considers it as a good example of how researchers and media can work together.
