The new vice-rectors of the University of Lapland have been chosen for the term 1 January 2023 – 31 December 2024. The successful candidates were Satu Uusiautti and Soili Nystén-Haarala.

UArctic's annual Assembly meeting was held on 1–3 June 2022 in Portland, Maine, US, with pre-conference on 30–31 May in Portsmouth. The Assembly meeting elected new members to UArctic Board and other bodies, approved UArctic's annual reports and welcomed new members and Thematic Networks among other decisions.

The Annual Celebration of the University of Lapland was organized on Tuesday the 1st of March. The alum of the year, the teacher of the year, the student community of the year and the doctoral dissertation of the year were awarded. Furthermore, the rector’s award was presented and the medals awarded by the President of Finland on the 6th of December 2021 were given. Staff members with long careers at the university were also awarded.

The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre (FINEEC) audited our quality system on the 2nd and 3rd of December 2021. By decision of the Higher Education Evaluation Committee on 16 February 2022, the University of Lapland has been awarded a quality label for a period of six years.

Salaried doctoral education at the University of Lapland attracted a great deal of attention

At the turn of the year, the University of Lapland had four salaried doctoral education vacancies for doctoral researchers. "The Arctic in a Changing World” doctoral programme was launched a little over a year ago, and this is the second open application round for paid vacancies. The final selections are made in March.

University of Lapland renews commitment to host the UArctic International Secretariat long term

The University of Lapland and UArctic ry (UArctic Association registered in Finland) signed a new cooperation agreement on October 8, 2021. The new agreement creates a stable home for the UArctic International Secretariat, with the intent of continued, long-term hosting by the University of Lapland. The UArctic International Secretariat is the only permanent Arctic secretariat in Finland.

Professors’ Council established at the university of Lapland

Grant from Suomen ulkomaankaupan edistämisrahasto awarded to Joonas Ervasti

In spring 2020 Suomen Ulkomaankaupan Edistämisrahasto (SUE, the Finnish foreign trade promotion fund), the University of Lapland, and the University of Eastern Finland signed a collaboration agreement with an aim to support master’s theses that address the internationalisation or export of companies in Lapland and eastern Finland. In the second cooperation application period, Joonas Ervasti from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Lapland was rewarded for his thesis in management that explores the utilisation of design thinking in supporting the international growth of Finnish companies.

In its organisational meeting, the new Board of the University of Lapland nominated Professor Hannele Niemi, research director, as the Chair for another three years. MSc Olli Väyrynen, vice president, business development at Finavia, was nominated as the Vice-Chair. The term of the Board started on 1 January 2021 and ends on 31 December 2023.
