University entrance exams to be replaced by alternative admissions procedures this spring

The Finnish universities have concluded that, due to the coronavirus situation, organising traditional entrance examinations is not possible without compromising the safety of those involved. What makes guaranteeing safety impossible is the severity of the pandemic, the difficulty of identifying those at a higher risk for serious illness, as well as the risks associated with the examination situation itself.

Cooperation process led to personnel reductions at the University of Lapland

As a result of the cooperation negotiations, on 7 April 2020 the Board of the University of Lapland approved guidelines, according to which 16 persons will be laid off. Additional ways to reduce another 23 persons are retirement, discontinuation of fixed-term relationships, and voluntary arrangements.

The Finnish Government has decided to extend the measures to address the state of emergency until 13 May 2020. Thus, the restrictions and special arrangements in the University of Lapland are extended by one month until 13 May 2020, too. We are prepared to continue the emergency arrangements until the end of the spring term, if necessary.

The doctoral dissertation by FM Adrian Braun, entitled "Corporate Social Responsibility in the Barents region – A Situational Analysis of Metal Mining" will be publicly examined online at the University of Eastern Finland on 24.3.2020 at 12. Braun is the visiting researchers of the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland.

"I was never ‘indigenous’ until I studied at university and read about my home islands and my own languages in English.” This is how Madoka Hammine starts her doctoral thesis, in which she explores the meaning of indigeneity based on her experiences of growing up in the Ryukyus in Japan and on her experiences outside the indigenous language community. Hammine’s doctoral research on indigenous language revitalization opened a door for her to tell other people about herself, to reconnect with her heritage, to learn about the international understanding of indigeneity, and to reevaluate the possibilities of her own community.

The winners of the Christmas stamp design competition, organized by Posti and University of Lapland’s Faculty of Art and Design, have been selected. The three winners were picked out of a total of 174 entries, and two of them will be featured in the Christmas stamps released next November.

The scale and character of a multitude of changes observed in today’s world are nothing short of a fundamental transformation of the Earth’s systems and many of these changes are witnessed first-hand in the Arctic. In her dissertation, on the basis of the case study of the Arctic Council (AC), political scientist Malgorzata (Gosia) Smieszek puts forward a concept of informal international regimes that are concluded by states through the means of non-legally binding instruments. She argues that informal international regimes have a number of features that make them increasingly important in our toolbox of mechanisms to address demands and challenges of international collaboration and governance in the era of rapid change.
