Workshop on gender inequality regarding caregivers in aging sector

SEEYouth research project is focusing on developing new ways to prevent youth marginalization, improving youth employment and increasing opportunities for the youth through design and Art Based Research (ABR). Multi-disciplinary project utilizes social sciences and arts in the development of Trans-Atlantic Mirroring (T-AM) method. Climate service gives forecast on good snowmaking conditions to ski resorts

Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland and Ruka Ski Resort are co-designing a climate service that provides a seasonal forecast on conditions for snowmaking during the entire skiing season. The service tells what is the most climate-friendly and profitable time for snowmaking.

Academic of the Year – Researcher Nafisa Yeasmin

Nafisa Yeasmin, Doctor of Social Sciences, has received the Academic of the Year award granted by the Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers (FUURT). She works as a project manager at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. Yeasmin is an active academic and a social activist whose research has a high and direct impact on the society. Yeasmin received the award on Friday at FUURT’s International University seminar held at Aalto University in Espoo.

The University of Lapland to Introduce Changes to Its Graduate School

The Graduate School of the University of Lapland contributes to the doctoral education provided by the faculties through providing training that is open to all the doctoral candidates of the university, and by organising events targeted at doctoral candidates and their supervisors. Improving doctoral candidates’ labour-market connections is a new and important form of doctoral training. In order to be able to better respond to the current and future needs, a working group with members from across the faculties and research units of the university has been set up to develop the Graduate School.

The University of Lapland to enhance its research funding

The University of Lapland competes for international research funding alongside other universities and research organisations. The university’s own Research Services unit has supported the acquisition of funding already for five years. During this time, the amount of research funding and the quality of our research have stepped up substantially. The long-term goal is to increase the share of project funding to 40% of the total funding.

The research grant applications of the Service Design Research Group (CO-STARS) achieved significant success during Spring 2019. Two of the European Commission Horizon calls under the programme H2020 Transformations were successful and are currently in the grant preparation process. The research group received funding to the amount of 3 million Euro for the project titled “Acting on the Margin - Arts as a Social Sculpture” (AMASS).

Barents Studies: local governance have little impact on national strategies

Even through national strategic documents, which emphasizes the importance of local actors ability to influence the strategies and plans for sustainable regional development, local governance still have little impact on formulation and materialization of those strategies. In this sense, there is a tension between rhetoric and reality.

Sustainable development is an underlying theme of the whole Arctic Arts Summit 2019, and issues of sustainable development are key to many presentations and panel discussions, which have different themes. For example, ecological issues are discussed as part of the challenges and opportunities for the arts in the Arctic theme. A theme of creative capability building is based on expectations of growth in the creative industries, as opposed to growth in use of raw and natural resources. The Arctic need arts education to build creative capability, and quality arts education is essential for sustainable development in the Arctic.

A thousand international experts on art and design to visit Rovaniemi
