  • Northern Universities' running championships

    The Universities of Lapland and Oulu will organise a staff running event on 28 June 2014. The Northern Universities' running championships will be a sister event to the Rovaniemi Marathon arranged on the same day. In addition, the long-distance championship of the university students in Lapland will be nailed down during the same event.

  • A new guidebook on best practices in mining

    A joint research project of the University of Lapland, the University of Oulu, and the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) has translated its guidebook on mining into English. The guide provides recommendations for social impact assessment, for land use planning, and for the reconciliation of mining and other livelihoods.

    The first issue of a new academic journal "Barents Studies: Peoples, Economies and Politics" is published. The new journal consists of multidisciplinary peer-reviewed articles, book reviews and presentations of young scholars and their Barents related research. The journal is published in printed as well as in electronic form and it is free of charge for all interested readers.

  • Reindeer grazing may counteract effects of climate warming on tundra carbon sink

    Local reindeer grazing history is an important determinant in the response of an ecosystem's carbon sink to climate warming, say researchers at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. Their study was published in the journal Nature Climate Change on 16 March 2014. The research project has been funded by the Academy of Finland.

  • Barents Café: How to catch the best photos of the northern lights

    In a late Friday evening in Arktikum, two arctic photographers from AV-Lappi, Timo Veijalainen and Miika Sirkiä, will guide us to the world of nature photos and tell how to catch the best photos of the aurora borealis. Amateur photographer and wilderness guide Pekka Koski will show some pictures of aurora borealis over Rovaniemi. The event is part of the “Scientific tourism and service design” project, coordinated by the Arktikum Science Centre, Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland.

  • EU Arctic Information Centre gets European Parliament support

    The European Parliament has accepted in the Plenary 12th March 2014 a resolution on the Arctic Strategy for the EU. The resolution includes paragraphs that support the establishment of the EU Arctic Information Centre as a networked undertaking with a permanent office in Rovaniemi. The Parliament also urges the Commission to proceed swiftly on the establishment of the EU Arctic Information Centre after the results of the 18 months Preparatory Action (PA) project on the Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment of Development of the Arctic to be published this spring.

  • Reconstructing minds: Conference in August

    The conference “Reconstructing minds – the ethics of post-war memory and recollection” will be held at the University of Lapland on 25–27 August 2014. The conference will deal with topics relating to material and mental reconstruction, such as memory, remembering and recollecting; forgetting, remaining silent and being silenced.

  • Finnish-Japanese seminar on Northern indigenous peoples

    The Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland and the Muroran Institute of Technology from Hokkaido, Japan, organize together a seminar on “Cultural Resilience and Human Rights – Perspectives of Northern Indigenous Peoples”. Last several years, the University of Lapland and the Muroran Institute of Technology have strengthened their reciprocal cooperation and during the seminar days the rectors of the two institutes will sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutes.

  • Training course for Barents journalists

    A group of almost 20 journalists from northern Norway and north-west Russia start on Monday 24th of February 2014 a training course arranged in Rovaniemi and Oulu, Finland, in order to boost their journalist networks and enhance communication in the Barents region. Participants also get to know important Northern Finnish discussion themes such as economy and tourism. The course is arranged by the Barents Mediasphere project led by the Arctic Centre, the University of Lapland.

  • Researchers from the University of Lapland will present their work at the University of Bristol

    The research project "BIOS – The Biopolitics of Sustainable Development in the Barents Region" (2011–2013) has probed questions of development, biopolitics and the North. Results of the project will be presented at the University of Bristol during spring 2014.

  • Arctic Design Week will start on Monday

    The world’s northernmost design week – Arctic Design Week – will start on Monday, February 17th. The design week is arranged in Rovaniemi for the sixth time. Most of the events are open for all and free of charge.

  • New book exhibition: Barents Stories – How Do We See the Sea?

    A new book exhibition about people on the shores of the Barents Sea will be opened on Thursday 20th February at 16:15, at the Arctic Centre Library, Arktikum house. The exhibition ‘Barents Stories – How Do We See the Sea?’ is based on materials collected during expeditions in the High Arctic by Senior Researcher Anna Stammler-Gossmann from Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland.

  • Funding for cooperation in gender research

    The Nordic Information on Gender NIKK has allocated a grant of DKK 150,000 to the Unit of Gender Studies at the Faculty of Education for a one year project to build the network focusing on northern livelihood changes from gender perspective.

  • International evaluation: University of Lapland has the potential to turn its small size to advantage

    After a careful review of the international research being done at the University of Lapland, an international committee has recommended that all research be aligned under the profile For the North – For the World and that tourism research be reframed as a strategic focus area. The committee also recommends that the University should strengthen its line of research focusing on sustainable development in the areas of environmental education and on art and design.

  • Dissertation: Pedagogical expertise in schools has not kept up with technological advances

    Pedagogical change in Finnish educational institutions has not kept up with the pace of technological development. It was discovered in the doctoral dissertation of Keijo Sipilä that if there is will for more extensive utilisation of technology in teaching, it is necessary to provide support to teachers’ ideas, organise varied training, and highlight the roles of teachers and pupils.

  • Development of Social Work Doctoral Education in Finnish-Chinese Collaboration

    The Finnish National University Network for Social Work (SOSNET) launches collaboration in social work doctoral education between Finland and China. The network is coordinated by the University of Lapland and has just received 47,800 euro project funding from the Centre for International Mobility CIMO for the development of social work doctoral education.

  • China-Nordic Arctic Research Center inaugurated

    On December 10th 2013, the Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC), and six institutes from the Nordic countries as well as three other institutes from China signed in Shanghai a Cooperation Agreement on the China-Nordic Arctic Research Center (CNARC) to formally mark the inauguration of CNARC. Finland is represented by the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland.

  • Dissertation: Mobile technology can support studying; particularly students with children could benefit

    University students expect that they can use mobile information and communication technology in their studies. Technology can make studying more flexible; flexibility would be beneficial especially for university students with children. It was concluded in the doctoral dissertation of M.Ed. Hanna Vuojärvi that, according to students, teachers have not been able to harness technology to bring more versatility in their teaching methods and content.

  • Dissertation: Educated Finns succeed in finding work abroad

    Young and educated Finns, for whom Paris, London or Berlin may be as likely a hometown as Helsinki or Rovaniemi, are one of the main migrant groups leaving Finland. The doctoral dissertation of Saara Koikkalainen concluded that highly skilled Finns do not face insurmountable barriers when looking for work in other EU countries. Finding a job that matches one’s skills and education may yet require adaptation, perseverance, and sometimes even choosing to look for work in a totally different field.

  • Visiting lecturer on new developments in social impact assessment

    Frank Vanclay, Professor of Cultural Geography at the University of Groningen, will give a lecture on social impact assessments on Wednesday, November 27, at the Arktikum House. Social impact assessments are an essential part of large-scale industrial development projects. In Finland social impacts are assessed under the environmental impact assessment required by law. Professor Vanclay’s lecture ”New Developments in Social Impact Assessment” will focus especially on new directions and developments and best practices in social impact assessment procedures.

  • Rovaniemi Sustainability Jam on November 22–24

  • River Lights in Rovaniemi – Arctic Shore Lights in Iceland

    The annual event River Lights will take place on Friday, 8 November, starting at 7 p.m. This year, students of the University of Lapland will direct a sister event, the Arctic Shore Lights, in Iceland; these two events will take place at the same time.
