Focus

The issue of ethics is gaining increasing attention in academic and public debates. For instance, ethics is at the heart of the discussion on multiple crises the world is facing: academics are more and more concerned about ethics and the politics in doing research; and consumers, citizens and businesses encounter new, complex ethical questions in their everyday life. Therefore, there is a pressing need for developing novel forms of ethics that capture these phenomena and help to work toward novel ethical foundations for co-existing in our world.

The purpose of this seminar is to enable and foster the multidisciplinary debate on the issue of ethics as a research topic and as a mode of living, both as academics and as citizens. The term living not only refers to human co-existence, but also involves living with various forms of non-human entities and species – animals, plants, things, matter, houses, soil, water, air – and in various places and spaces from homes to cities, forests and beyond. Ethical everyday life with these human and non-human relations might require that we call into question our habituated ways of thinking of and acting.

Day 1: open day of key note speeches and discussion

The first day, 13 September 2017, is dedicated to key note speeches and an interview of a panel of experts. The day is open to the public – anyone who is interested can join the audience. The key notes are internationally recognized scholars specialized on ethics, and the panel of experts represents different fields, elaborating on ethics in their everyday praxis.

Ethics is approached from various theoretical and philosophical perspectives, including ethics of care, corporeal ethics, animal ethics, Foucauldian ethics, and business ethics. Day 1 will explore novel and innovative ways of thinking of ethics and re-imaging ethical forms of living and relating to others in the world. In particular, we wish to approach ethics as an embodied praxis that is performed in and of the everyday.

Day 2: workshop

The second day, 14 September 2017, is dedicated to a workshop that allows doctoral candidates and researchers to present and work on their papers in a collaborative and encouraging spirit. The aim of the workshop is to help participants discuss ethical challenges and questions involved in their study in an open atmosphere.

Call for papers (closed)

We invite submissions for the workshop on Day 2. We welcome texts that may, but are not limited to, discuss traditional and emerging theoretical perspective on ethics (e.g. corporeal ethics, feminist ethics), ethical issues around various topics (e.g. food, travel, waste), sub-fields of ethics (e.g. animal ethics, business ethics), or important themes such as artificial intelligence, research ethics, ethics related to doing and writing research, ethics of space and place etc.
