The study, published today in the journal Science Advances, reports that the Arctic has warmed by 0.75 degrees Celsius in the last decade alone. By comparison, the Earth as a whole has warmed by nearly the same amount, 0.8 degrees Celsius, over the past 137 years.

The scale and character of a multitude of changes observed in today’s world are nothing short of a fundamental transformation of the Earth’s systems and many of these changes are witnessed first-hand in the Arctic. In her dissertation, on the basis of the case study of the Arctic Council (AC), political scientist Malgorzata (Gosia) Smieszek puts forward a concept of informal international regimes that are concluded by states through the means of non-legally binding instruments. She argues that informal international regimes have a number of features that make them increasingly important in our toolbox of mechanisms to address demands and challenges of international collaboration and governance in the era of rapid change.

Nafisa Yeasmin, Doctor of Social Sciences, has received the Academic of the Year award granted by the Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers (FUURT). She works as a project manager at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. Yeasmin is an active academic and a social activist whose research has a high and direct impact on the society. Yeasmin received the award on Friday at FUURT’s International University seminar held at Aalto University in Espoo.

The Graduate School of the University of Lapland contributes to the doctoral education provided by the faculties through providing training that is open to all the doctoral candidates of the university, and by organising events targeted at doctoral candidates and their supervisors. Improving doctoral candidates’ labour-market connections is a new and important form of doctoral training. In order to be able to better respond to the current and future needs, a working group with members from across the faculties and research units of the university has been set up to develop the Graduate School.

The University of Lapland competes for international research funding alongside other universities and research organisations. The university’s own Research Services unit has supported the acquisition of funding already for five years. During this time, the amount of research funding and the quality of our research have stepped up substantially. The long-term goal is to increase the share of project funding to 40% of the total funding.

The research grant applications of the Service Design Research Group (CO-STARS) achieved significant success during Spring 2019. Two of the European Commission Horizon calls under the programme H2020 Transformations were successful and are currently in the grant preparation process. The research group received funding to the amount of 3 million Euro for the project titled “Acting on the Margin - Arts as a Social Sculpture” (AMASS).
