Arctic Film Night 9th February: Inuk

The Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland will show a Greenlandic film Inuk at the Arctic Film Night on Tuesday 9th February 2016 at 18 in Arktikum building (Pohjoisranta 4, Rovaniemi). The audience can also meet film makers during the event.

Vulnerable Barents nature appear in exhibition at Arktikum

The touring exhibition “Barents – Nature has no borders” will be on view at the Arktikum Science Centre, Rovaniemi from 2nd Fabruary until 9th March 2016. The exhibition, exploring the globally unique nature of the Barents Region, consists of 15 photographs by Finnish, Swedish and Russian nature photographers.

Arctic Design Week addressing business and Arctic design

Business and design will be the main topics of the world’s northernmost design event Arctic Design Week arranged in Rovaniemi between 22 and 28 February 2016. The diverse contents of the event are spread around the city, offering an overview of the design expertise of the University of Lapland and the North. The University of Lapland and Digile will host the Need for Speed (N4S) assembly in Rovaniemi between 8 and 9 December 2015. More than a hundred members from 40 organisations of the N4S consortium will participate in the assembly held in the Faculty of Art and Design. The N4S program will create the foundation for Finnish software-intensive businesses in the new digital economy.

Emilia Lindroos receives Sprache und Recht award

Researcher of legal linguistics Dr. Emilia Lindroos has received the Sprache und Recht award presented by the working group on Language and Law (Arbeitskreis Sprache und Recht) of the University of Regensburg in Germany. The award was handed out during the Dies academicus ceremony on Thursday 26 November 2015 at the University of Regensburg.

Children's Position in Post-Separation Stalking

Researchers at the University of Lapland and experts on violence at the Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters have been engaged in a range of studies on children’s experiences of stalking following their parents’ separation. Findings indicate that more attention has to be paid to children’s experiences and situation under such circumstances.

Art exhibition by the Ásthildur Jónsdóttir in Gallery Kopio

Icelander doctoral student Ásthildur Jónsdóttir will host her exhibition "Value Archive" in Gallery Kopio from 24 November to 3 December. Ásthildur Jónsdóttir is working on a joint doctoral degree from University of Lapland and the University of Iceland looking at the potential of art in education for sustainability. Value Archive is created with participation of group of 45 women. Jónsdóttir will keep an open artist lecture on Friday 27 November from 10:45 am to 12 noon in the lecture hall 16.

Doctoral thesis: Predictive system design solutions to direct and optimise the flow of visitors in large spaces

In his thesis MA (Dipl. Des.) Markus Schröppel focuses on producing guidance aid for large, shared spaces through graphic design. The results of the study and the corresponding solutions and recommendations can be used to avoid problems in confronting icons and guidance systems. The presented solutions, with the array of methodologies and the focus on the user, enable us to efficiently check and evaluate the functionality of existing sign systems.

Exhibitions mark 25 years of Art Education at the University of Lapland

This week kicks off the 25th anniversary of Art Education at the University, with festivities in order – and in store – at the Faculty of Art and Design. The Faculty’s first department – Art Education – will celebrate its 25-year history with two series of exhibitions. The first, Arctic Enlightenment, will be featured in the Faculty’s Arktikum galleries, Valo and Katve 1–2, and run from 12 November to 13 December. The second, Art Education in Change, will fill four galleries – Seinä, Hämärä, Kilo and Kajo – in Wing F of the main university building from 17 November to 3 December.

The recent surge in international migration has evoked the age-old question of how we welcome strangers – of hospitality and responsibility. Emily Höckert’s thesis describes the author’s search for hospitable encounters in the particular context of tourism development. The study investigates how hosts and guests welcome each other in ethical encounters. Exploring openness to others – the essence of hospitality – encourages us to reflect on not only how we relate to others, but also how we relate to ourselves.

Next week, on the 2nd and 3rd of November, Rovaniemi will host the international conference Raw Materials University Days, a forum bringing together experts in the raw materials and extractive sectors. The featured speakers at the event represent key actors in research, education, business life and regional development as well as the highest decision-making level of the European Union. The conference will take up issues pertaining to the extractive industries, with a focus on regions and sustainable development. At the same time, it offers an occasion at which the extractive sector and universities can explore opportunities for mutual cooperation.

ETMU Days conference at the University of Lapland 22–23 October 2015

For the first time in its history, the annual conference of ETMU (Society for the Study of Ethnic Relations and International Migration) will be arranged at the University of Lapland. The conference focuses on mobility, roots, and crossing of borders especially from the perspective of indigenous peoples. Along with the event, Rovaniemi will accommodate nearly a hundred Finnish and international researchers sharing an interest in indigenous peoples, ethnic relations, and migration.

Audra Simpson, a professor of anthropology from Columbia University in the City of New York, ranks among today's top researchers of indigenous peoples. Between 21 and 23 October 2015, she will be paying a visit to the University of Lapland. Professor Simpson will be one of the keynote speakers at the annual conference of ETMU – Society for the Study of Ethnic Relations and International Migration.
