  • New publication on the history of Sámi education in Finland

    A book on the history of Sámi education and schools in Finland (Saamalaisten kansanopetuksen ja koulunkäynnin historia Suomessa) has been published recently. It is the first comprehensive work dealing with the history of Sámi schools and the position of Sámi education in the Finnish school system.

  • Publication on Barents visual arts in the 1970s and 1980s

    The recent history of Northern visual arts is discussed in a new publication authored by art professionals and art researchers from the North Calotte. The book focuses on visual arts and cultural heritage of the 1970s and 1980s – the time when official international cooperation between the countries of the Barents region has not started yet and when Northern visual arts and artists were still not well known regionally and internationally.

  • Research project based on service design receives more than one million euros

    A research project led by Professor Satu Miettinen has received a grant of EUR 1.1 million from the European Union. This research project draws on service design. It investigates and creates solutions to the problems of unemployed San youths living in South Africa and Namibia.

  • New European Funding for a Project Combing Humans, Animals and Climate Change

    A research project on Human-Animal relations under climate change in Northern Eurasia (HUMANOR) has received major funding from a new European instrument. The European Joint Programming Initiative on Climate: “Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe” (JPI Climate ) has awarded about two million euros to the project which is led by Professor Bruce Forbes from the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland, Finland.

  • New book on art and design from the northern perspective

    Lapland University Press has released "Relate North 2014: Engagement, Art and Representation" edited by Timo Jokela and Glen Coutts. The book brings together the work of leading scholars to explore issues in the field of contemporary arts, design and visual culture. This is the first international peer-reviewed publication produced as part of the work of the Thematic Network of Arctic Sustainable Arts and Design (ASAD), University of the Arctic.

  • Dissertation: Loving nature goes together with conquering it in the Russian industrialized North

    People, living in industrial towns built during the soviet period in the Russian Arctic, officially came to the North for 'conquering nature' and 'mastering the North', as it was proclaimed by the official ideology. The doctoral dissertation of M.Soc., MEnvSc Alla Bolotova shows how over time the perception of the Northern natural environment by settlers in the North changed from an alien and hostile area to a familiar and personal dwelling place.

  • Tekes to finance a research project advancing the methods of service design

    The Faculty of Art and Design of the University of Lapland has received a Tekes grant to finance a research project contributing to the methods of service design. The project will be implemented in collaboration with businesses. The total costs of the project amount to €800,000, of which the share of businesses is €80,000.

    Licentiate of Art Hannu Eerikäinen and media scholar Dr. Sam Inkinen will be giving a Studia Generalia lecture on Monday, 1 December, from 12:15 to 1:45 pm at the University of Lapland. The lecture and discussion will be based on Hannu Eerikäinen's doctoral thesis, titled "Cybersex and Prosthetic God. "Sex," Desire and the Posthuman Body in Cyber Discourse".

  • Dissertation: Awareness of subjective interests and their fulfilment are crucial for the student's work-placement assessment experience

    Finnish higher education institutions are currently renewing their curricula, in compliance with the aims of the Bologna Process. The process highlights recognition and descriptions of competencies required in working life. The aim is to transform the competence descriptions into learning aims and assessment criteria. Master of Health Sciences Pirjo Vuoskoski studied in her doctoral dissertation student assessment in relation to authentic workplaces, and Finnish higher education. In her research, she gives students' experiences a central role. According to Vuoskoski, the awareness of the student of her/his subjective interests, and their more or less sufficient fulfilment, is the most essential aspect of the student's assessment experience.

  • Reindeer and Lappish handicrafts at Arctic Market Days on December 12–14

    Arctic Market Days brings unique Arctic handicrafts, art, and Christmas spirit to Arktikum in Rovaniemi in the middle of December 2014.     E-LOCAL – Electronically Learning Other Cultures and Languages – is a collection of online language courses in six languages. The selection includes Dutch, Finnish, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, and Portuguese. The language courses contain a significant amount of culture-related information as well.

  • Dissertation: Personal experience the only way to grasp the unconscious

    The unconscious has been studied extensively through various approaches. But theory alone is not enough; studying the unconscious requires subjective experiencing, notes Asta Sutton (MA) in her doctoral dissertation. In her thesis Sutton created a model of artistic interpretation that makes it possible to outline Salvador Dali’s, Jackson Pollock's, as well as her own painting process.

  • Analysis of Russia's activities and interests in the Arctic

    According to a report on Russian strategies in the Arctic, there is a need for more transparent, predictable and consistent policies of Arctic states. The report, launched in Sochi, Russia, is written by Professor Lassi Heininen from the University of Lapland, Finland, Professor Alexander Sergunin from the St. Petersburg State University, Russia and Associate Professor Gleb Yarovoy from the Petrozavodsk State University, Russia.

    Research associate, PhD Eveline Hipeli from the Zurich University of Teacher Education, Switzerland, will visit the Centre for Media Pedagogy at the University of Lapland’s Faculty of Education in the beginning of November.
