  • Conference on indigenous sacred sites in the Arctic

    The Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland will organize an international conference on indigenous sacred sites in the Arctic. The conference “Protecting the sacred: Recognition of Sacred Sites of Indigenous Peoples for Sustaining Nature and Culture in Northern and Arctic Regions” will be held in Rovaniemi and Pyhätunturi, Finland, on September 11–13.

  • European Commission approved preparatory project for EU Arctic Information Centre

    The European Commission has selected a consortium led by the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland (Rovaniemi, Finland) to carry out an one million euro project* to produce a “Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment of development of the Arctic”. From the scientific point of view, the project is to fill in a knowledge gap related to the topic, especially in Arctic International Law.

    The first national Conference on Sámi Pedagogy for teachers and educational authorities was held in Inari, Finland, in 2011. The conference was arranged by the University of Lapland in collaboration with the Regional State Administrative Agency of Lapland, Giellagas Institute of the University of Oulu, and the Sámi Education Institute.

  • Barents Mediasphere aims to help journalists and to serve better information

    Cross border communication and information in the Barents region will be promoted through Barents Mediasphere, a project that is currently beginning its activities. This two-year project is funded by the European Union’s Kolarctic ENPI cross border co-operation programme with a total financing of about 900,000 euros.

The above-mentioned questions are discussed in a book called Early Child Development and Care published by Routledge. The book, edited by Professor Kaarina Määttä and Specialist Satu Uusiautti, covers the development, rearing, earning, teaching, and care of under-ten-year-old children in Finland.

    On Sunday 2nd December 2012 the Arktikum House has its 20 years anniversary and the Ministry of foreign affairs comes to Rovaniemi with a gift from famous Venezuelan photographer Antonio Briceno: a big photograph called 520 Renos (520 Reindeers). Before coming to the Arctic Centre the picture has been on display at the UN headquarters, New York.

    An exhibition depicting internationalization in Helsinki in the 19th century has been established in the University Main Lobby and its surroundings. The exhibition, International 19th Century – Coffee from Germany, Chocolate from Switzerland, consists of twenty roll-ups that show the development of Helsinki and Finland in the 19th century. The focus of the exhibition is on the influence that immigrants from German-speaking countries had on the process.
