The degree programme combines two social scientific subjects in a complementary way. The studies introduce you to the nature of being social, cultural and political, while developing your understanding of social scientific phenomena in national and international contexts.
Studying political sciences and sociology requires an interest in theoretical, historical and topical issues. The studies will provide you with a wide range of knowledge and skills needed for social scientific research and expert tasks.
Through your studies you will get a solid foundation for developing your critical thinking and interpersonal and communication skills. The main focus is on understanding the essential social, cultural and political trends of modern society. You can tailor your professional expertise with minor subjects, specialisations and studies abroad.
The studies in different majors complement each other and are partly joint, particularly at the beginning of your studies. You will choose your major in the course of your studies.
Please note that while some of the courses (see WebOodi) can be studied in English, the programme can only be completed in Finnish.
Political Sciences combine the different disciplinary approaches of political sciences and international relations. Together they give you a comprehensive look to the most important, topical themes of political research.
You have an excellent chance to focus on the northern and Arctic politics and particular political themes, such as the language and minority policy, regional policy and environmental and natural resource policy.
Studies in Political Sciences can also be taken as minor studies. They offer all students interested in social and political issues a diverse and fascinating study module.
In your studies you will explore political phenomena and processes in terms of international law, economy, history, culture, religion and organisations.
Read more about the studies in WebOodi where you can also register for courses and take a look at the teaching schedules.
In Sociology studies you will become familiar with research on social groups, institutions, interaction, and the ways of being together. You will examine the research topics comprehensively, adopting perspectives spanning the individual, small-group, national and global levels.
You will seek to understand the world as a unit that encompasses both the past and the present. The studies provide you with tools for critical social observation. This will include looking into how new knowledge on the laws governing the forms of social life, as well as on the predictable aspects of changes in those forms, reveals societal structures, shortcomings and power relations.
The studies are aimed particularly at students who are interested in society and culture. You can also take them as a minor.
The English-taught Master’s Degree Programme in Global Biopolitics introduces you to the perceptions of Michel Foucault and other central biopolical theorists on the politics surrounding biological life. During your studies you will explore criticism of theory and power, and the question of how the concept of politics and its issues have changed with time. You will approach these topics from the perspective of biopolitics.
In the master’s degree studies you will gain knowledge of how nations and other political forces have learned to govern populations in the global age, and how biopolitical governance has evolved in response to the emergence of global problems.
At the moment there is no intake of new students to the programme.
